Beginning Today

by Evelyn Dias Beginning today, I will no longer worry about yesterday. It is in the past and the past will never change. Only I can change by choosing to do so. Beginning today, I will no longer worry about tomorrow. I cannot make the most of tomorrow without first making the most of today. Beginning today, I will look in the mirror and I will see a person worthy of my respect and admiration. This capable person looking back at me is someone I enjoy spending time with and someone I would like to get to know better. Beginning today, I will cherish each moment of my life. I value this gift bestowed upon me in this world and I will unselfishly share this gift with others. I will use this gift to enhance the lives of others. Beginning today, I will take a moment to revel in the mysteries I encounter. I will face challenges with courage and determination. I will overcome what barriers there may be which hinder my quest for growth and self-improvement. Beginning today, I will t

Build Bridges, Not Fences

Andrea Dias Once upon a time two brothers, who lived on adjoining farms, fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said, “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help you?” “Yes,” said the older brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbour; in fact, it’s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll do him one

Our Mistakes Are Burned Up

Jackson Dias Thomas Edison lost two million dollars worth of equipment and the record of much of his life's work when the Edison Industries were destroyed by fire in 1914. The next morning, walking among the ashes of so many of his hopes and dreams, the 67 year old Edison said, "There is a great value in distress. All ur mistakes are burned up. Thank God, we can start anew." It is this Jesus, this God-Man, who alone can turn life into a gay and glorious adventure, all the more exciting because it is hazardous as well as satisfying. To take Jesus into your factory or into your office is to see everyone and everything in a new light and in a new way. Jesus beside you at the kitchen sink, Jesus beside you as you sit at a crowded counter eating your sandwich or drinking your beer, Jesus beside you in your friendships and your family relationships. This is the meaning of the Resurrection: Jesus in the world, but not of it. Jesus in your world hallowing the homely and sanc

Lost Man

A man had been lost and walking in the desert for about five days. One hot day, he comes to the home of a preacher. Tired and weak, he crawls up to the house and collapses on the doorstep. The preacher takes him in and nurses him back to health. Feeling better, the man asks the preacher for directions to the nearest town. The preacher tells him the directions, and offers to lend him his horse to make it. The preacher says, "However, there is a special thing about this horse. You have to say "Thank God' to make it go and 'Amen' to make it stop." Anxious to get to town, the man says, "Sure, okay," and gets on the horse. He says, "Thank God" and sure enough, the horse starts walking. A bit later he says louder, "Thank God, Thank God," and the horse starts trotting. Feling really brave, the man says, "Thank God! Thank God! THANK GOD!" and the horse is soon up to a full run! About then he realises he's heading for

Dear God

Practicality vs Religion

by Astria E. Fernandes During a recent ecumenical gathering, a secretary rushed in shouting, “The building is on fire!!!” The Methodists gathered in the corner and prayed. The Baptists cried, “Where is the holy water?” The Quakers quietly praised God for the blessings that fire brings. The Lutherans posted a notice on the door declaring the fire was evil. The Roman Catholics passed the plate to cover the damage. The Jews posted symbols on the doors hoping the fire would pass. The Congregationalists shouted, “Every man for himself!” The Fundamentalists proclaimed, “It’s the vengeance of God!” The Episcopalians formed a procession and marched out. The Christian Scientists concluded there was no fire. The Presbyterians appointed a chairperson who was to appoint a committee to look into the matter and submit a written report. The Secretary grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the fire out. **************** Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation, and

The Pit

by Annsika Gonsalves A man fell into a pit and couldn’t get himself out. A subjective person came along and said, “I feel for you down there.” An objective person walked by and said, “It’s logical that someone would fall down there.” A Pharisee said, “Only bad people fall into pits.” A mathematician calculated how deep the pit was. A news reporter wanted the exclusive story on the pit. A self-pitying person said, “You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen my pit.” A fire-and-brimstone preacher said, “You deserve your pit.” A Christian scientist observed, “The pit is just in your mind.” A psychologist noted, “Your mother and father are to blame for your being in that pit.” A self-esteem therapist said, “Believe in yourself and you can get out of that pit.” An optimist said, “Things could be worse.” A pessimist claimed, “Things will get worse.” Jesus, seeing the man, took him by the hand and lifted him out of the pit.

Seven World Wonders

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present "Seven Wonders of the World." Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes: 1. Egypt's Great Pyramids 2. Taj Mahal 3. Grand Canyon 4. Panama Canal 5. Empire Stae Building 6. St. Peter's Basilica 7. China's Great Wall While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the 'Seven Wonders of the World' are: 1. To See 2. To Hear 3. To Touch 4. To Taste 5. To Feel 6. To Laugh 7. And to Love." The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary

God Will Not Ask

REMEMBER THIS: God will not ask what kind of car you drove, but He will ask how many people you drove who did not have transportation. God will not ask the square footage of your house, but He will ask how many people you welcomed into your home. God will not ask about the clothes you had in your closet, but He will ask how many people you helped to clothe. God will not ask what your highest salary was, but He will ask if you compromised your character to obtain it. God will not ask what your job title was, but He will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability. God will not ask how many friends you had, but He will ask how many people to whom you were a friend. God will not ask in what neighbourhood you lived, but He will ask how you treated your neighbours. God will not ask about the colour of your skin, but He will ask about the content of your character. God will not ask about your social status, but He will ask what kind of class you displayed. G

A Real Friend

A friend will stand by you even when you are wrong... A simple friend identifies himself when he calls. A real friend doesn't have to. A simple friend opens a conversation with a full news bulletin on his life. A eal friend says, "Whats's new with you?" A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent. A real friend says, "You've been whining about the same thing for 14 years. Get off your duff and do something about it." A simple friend has never seen you cry. A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears. A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names. A real friend has their phone numbers in his address book. A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party. A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean. A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed. A real friend asks you why you took so long to call. A simple friend seeks to talk with you about you

The Boxes

I have in my hand two boxes Which God gave me to hold. He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box And all your joys in the gold." I heeded His words, and in the two boxes Both my joys and sorrows I stored. But though the gold became heavier each day The black was light as before. With curiosity I opened the black I wanted to find out why And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole Which my sorrows had fallen by. I showed the hole to God, and mused "I wonder where my sorrows could be." He smiled a gentle smile and said "My child, they're all here with me." I asked God why He gave me the boxes Why the gold, and the black with the hole? "My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings The black is for you to let go." ************* If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns -Astria E. Fernandes

The 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd - That's Relationship! I shall not want - That's Supply! He maketh me lie down in green pastures - That's Rest! He leadeth me beside the still waters - That's Refreshment! He restoreth my soul - That's Healing! He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness - That's Guidance! For his name sake - That's Purpose! Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death - That's Testing! I will fear no evil - That's Protection! For Thou art with me - That's Faithfulness! Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me - That's Discipline! Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies - That's Hope! Thou annointest my head with oil - That's Consecration! My cup runneth over - That's Abundance! Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life - That's Blessing! And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord - That's Security! Forever! - That's Eternity! AMEN

St Estevam youth force truckers to unload sand

News item in the English daily Herald dated 22 Oct. 2013: St Estevam youth force truckers to unload sand October 22, 2013 TEAM HERALD teamherald@herald-goa.com PANJIM: With Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar expressing his reluctance to implement the ban on sand mining ordered by the National Green Tribunal--given that it is an important ingredient in construction--youth from St Estevam have decided to implement the ban and have stopped trucks ferrying sand in the dead of the night, making them unload the sand there itself. The bold move was made by a group called FORO Boys on Saturday midnight. They later proudly presented their achievement by hoisting a banner atop the seized sand declaring their achievement, which they said took place “while the police sleep”. When Herald spoke to Old Goa police inspector, he said the police were not intimated about the incident. Earlier in the assembly, the chief minister while replying to a calling attention motion on the sand issue

Education

Two nicely dressed ladies happen to start up a conversation while waiting in the Los Angeles airport. The first lady was an arrogant California woman married to a wealthy man. The second was a well-mannered elderly woman from the South. The conversation centered on they having children. The Californian started by saying, “When my first child was born, my husband built a beautiful mansion for me.” The lady from the South commented, “Well, isn’t that nice?” The first woman continued, “When my second child was born, my husband bought me a beautiful Mercedes-Benz.” Again, he lady with the Southern charm said, “Well, isn’t that nice?” The first woman continued boasting, “Then, when my third child was born, my husband bought me this exquisite diamond bracelet.” Yet again, the Southern lady commented, “Well, isn’t that nice?” The first woman then asked her companion, “What did your husband buy for you when you had your first child?” “My husband sent me to charm school,” declared

Give Up…

Give up watching television one evening a week. Visit some lonely or sick person instead. Give up looking at other people’s worst points. Concentrate on their strong points and positive attributes. Give up speaking unkindly. Let your speech be generous and understanding. Give up your worries. Trust God with your problems and frustrations. Give up hatred or dislike of anyone. Learn to love instead. Give up the fear which presents Christian witness. Seek courage to speak about your faith with others. Give up spending so much time with newspapers and magazines. Use some of that time to study your Bible. Give up grumbling. Learn to give thanks in everything. Give up ten o fifteen minutes each day. Use that time in prayer. Give up buying anything but essentials for yourself. Give that money to God’s work or someone in need. Give up judging by appearance and by the standards of the world. Learn to give up yourself to God. Carran Monteiro

Why Jesus Loves Little Children

When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard. My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on. When I look at a homeless person and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money, and I look away. My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back. When I hear music that I love, I know that I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm, so I sit self-consciously and listen. My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know the words, they make up their own. When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk. My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the ground laughing. When I pray, I say thy and thou and grant me this, give me that. My kids say, "Hi, God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away toni

St. Theresa of the Child Jesus

Born in Alencon, Normandy (France) in 1873, Marie Therese Martin entered the Carmel of Lisieux at the age of fifteen. There, she lived a life of humility, simplicity, and childlike trust in God. By word and example, she shared this "little way of spiritual childhood" with the novices in her community. She died in odour of sanctity on September 30, 1897 at the age of twenty-four. The rapid growth of devotion to this saint is one of the greatest phenomena of contemporary religious history. Pope Pius XI solemnly canonised her on May 17, 1925. On December 14, 1927, Pope Pius XI proclaimed St. Therese Principal Patroness, equal to St. Francis Xavier, of all missionaries, men and women, and of the missions in the whole world. On May 3, 1944, Pope Pius XII named St. Therese Secondary Patroness of France, equal to St. Joan of Arc. Jackson Dias
